Excavating the Rising Star

In 2013 and 2018, nine women, dubbed the Underground Astronauts, descended into a near-inaccessible cave system outside Johannesburg, South Africa. What they found rewrote the human evolutionary timeline. This production tells their story. It also asks what it costs to tell it.
The fossils these women uncovered were buried — possibly deliberately. That fact sat at the center of every creative decision: the ethics of excavation, of storytelling, of caring deeply about something that was never yours to begin with. The production was built around that discomfort rather than away from it.
It began in the lobby. Audiences met a curator — drawn from one of the real women's interviews — whose AI bots, assigned to narrate these women's lives, kept failing. They could only process stereotypes, couldn't hold nuance, couldn't make a human being legible. So the audience was recruited to help teach them. They walked a darkened hallway, oral histories finding them in the dark, until they arrived in a space still under construction: ladders, paint, scaffolding, all of it becoming part of the world. We handed them flashlights. The lights scattered across the walls became the fossils, glinting the way the astronauts described finding them deep in the cave.
Shadow work, choreography, and sound carried the rest. By the end, the audience had been made participants in the excavation itself, which was always the point. To care about something is to take responsibility for how you handle it.
